Marian Budos

On 21 April 2021, Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Spain will premiere Marian's latest orchestral work, a book-concerto "Adria's Confessions" featuring soloist Jacob Cordover (guitar) with the Royal Circle Artistic Orchestra.

This is a unique project based on the million-copy sold bestseller and multi-award wining novel Jo Confesso (Confessions) by the Catalonian celebrity writer Jaume Cabre, who has given Marian a permission to adapt his novel to music.

This premiere in the iconic concert hall with the seating capacity of 2,000 is supported by the ACT Government, Australian Embassy in Madrid, and Australian Music Centre.

This is a major concerto for classical guitar with 53 minutes in length, and it also features other instruments of the orchestra as soloists to portray the main characters of the novel.

Further information about the concert can be found on Palau de la Musica Catalana website:

World premieres of Tres meditcations (homenatge a Antoni Gauidi) and A New York Minute Posted: Jun 19 2019

Last Friday, guitarist John Couch premiered Marian's latest piece 'Tres meditacions', dedicated to Gaudi's Barcelona.

Tomorrow, the New York based couple: cellist Laura Metcalf and guitarist Rupert Boyd are premiering Marian's piece especially written for them: 'A New York Minute' in Canberra at the Wesley Music Centre.

Latest piece: Tres meditacions for retuned guitar Posted: Feb 19 2019

Tres meditacions (Three Meditations) is a piece for retuned guitar commissioned by John Couch.

This new composition in three movements is inspired by the city of Barcelona, Spain and pays a tribute to Antoni Gaudi's great talent:

1. Casa Batllo
2. La Sagrada Familia
3. Parc Guell

John Couch will premiere this piece later this year and will also take it to the Taranaki Guitar Festival in New Zealand in January 2020.

Last week, the amazing guitarist Jacob Cordover and Marian met with the multi-award winning million-copy bestselling and internationally renowned Catalonian novelist Jaume Cabre at the prestigious Carmen Balcells literary agency in Barcelona on Jaume Cabre's invitation to discussMarian's latest project - putting his profound and life-changing literary masterpiece 'Confessions' to music.â?¦/â?¦/1910050571) to music

Mr Cabre granted Marian the rights to work around his book and even agreed for Marian to use the chapters of his novel for movements of my new piece.

In further discussions with his agent Gloria, at this very cordial meeting, the project is now fully supported by the renowned 'Carmen Balcells' literary agency and we look forward to the answer from a leading Catalonian cultural institute for further support.

The project, very closely based on the novel, is in essence a concerto for guitar and orchestra with Jacob Cordover in the main role, as the lead character Adria from the book.

And lastly, the title of the work planned to be premiered in Barcelona next year, and then taken on a tour in Europe, is:

The Passing of the Black Star Posted: Feb 28 2017

My latest work for four guitars The Passing of a Black Star, a tribute to David Bowie, has been recorded in New Zealand by the NZ Guitar Quartet to be released in June/July, after a successful premiere in NZ and a consequent tour of China by the quartet. They have done a great job - thank you! They will play it on their tour of NZ in June this year.

This is one of my favourite pieces of music I have written in the last few years. I have used motifs, harmonies and ideas from David Bowie's last disc Blackstar, especially the song Blackstar, Lazarus and I can't give everything away.

New composition - 'One Last Time' Posted: Aug 2 2016

I have just finished writing a new composition 'One Last Time' to be premiered by guitarist Jan Labant in October at the Cithara Aediculae festival, Nitra, Slovakia.

Jan has played many of my composition and I consider him to be one of the greatest guitar players in the world. His technical prowess and lyrical interpretations of music are excuisite and unique. He is a great teacher too. He taught me most of what I know about guitar playing today.

He is also the classical guitar player featured in many of the recordings on this web site.

Thank you, Jan!

Cooma Music Competition Posted: Aug 19 2014

On Sunday, I had the privilege of adjudicating the 2014 Cooma Music Competition. This year, I was once again amazed by the talent of the young people of this beautiful Snowy Mountain region of Australia. I am not surprised that so many great musicians have come from this region. This is greatly thanks to the tireless and dedicated work of two wonderful people - Allan and Leslie Spencer, who have run the Cooma School of Music and the music shop in Cooma for decades now.
